Choral societies are at the heart of the British amateur singing tradition. Mounting concerts in their own right, often with professional orchestras and soloists, the mainstay of their repertoire is oratorio. They have also inspired works from a whole range of British composers in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. A seminal work of the tradition, is ElgarΓÇÖs Dream of Gerontius.
